Pink lotus flower seeds, from the Nelumbo nucifera plant, are oval, about the size of a peanut or pea, with a tough, dark brown or black shell. One end is pointed, the other has a slight dimple where it attached to the seed pod. Inside, beneath the hard shell, are brown and cream-colored coats protecting the embryo. These seeds can remain dormant for extended periods due to their impermeable outer layers. To germinate, the hard shell needs scarification. Once sprouted, they grow into aquatic plants with large, round leaves and stunning pink flowers that rise above the water.
